THEME : GANGS
The word 'gang' originally comes from old European words (Norse, Germanic, Old English) that initially meant "a going", "journey" or Passage".
The word evolved to mean a group of people journeying or travelling together. It would be used to describe those on a pilgramage together. It evolved further in the 17th and 18th century to mean a group of workers. In the 18th and 19th century it began to take on its more negative meaning, to describe people engaged in criminal behaviour. The term 'Gangster' appeared at the end of the 19th century.
Enjoy our unique selection of films that most definitely explore the notion of 'gangs'....from a journey across New York, and a defining art movement that came out of that same city's criminal gang scene....to the challenges of joining (and escaping) institutional and cultural gangs....to the sweet nostalgia of a gang of friends.

Monday 6th to Friday 10th July 2026 is film week at Trellick Tower.
A cinema screen has landed in the ball court and it is showing free films for five days.
UPDATE: We have our usual two main features showing each day, on either side of some perfect independent films focused on local film makers and/or local content.
After school we show a children's feature for young people and familes.
We then present an hour of curated films from Portobello Film Festival, for all the independent cinema lovers.
Each evening ends with a headline feature film from 7pm.
We are ready for the weather with two large gazebos to stay shaded from the sun or dry from the rain.

We carefully select our film programme each year to offer a diverse and engaging selection of great films.
However, this is a free outdoor cinema experience, so we always encourage parents in particular to make use of the excellent Internet Movie Database site - IMDB - to check that content is suitable for your children with their detailed Parent Guides.

A double Bill.
First up, through archival footage Shan Nicholson tells the story of the real Warriors that walked the streets of New York City in the 1970s and the harsh reality of gang life in a city that seemed to be falling apart.
Then, in our main and final feature film, members of a street gang known as the Warriors must fight their way from the Bronx to their home turf on Coney Island when they are falsely accused of assassinating a respected gang leader.
